S&P Global has agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin, a security standards provider for onchain finance, in a deal aimed at strengthening its foothold in digital asset risk assessment.
The agreement brings OpenZeppelin’s security expertise into S&P Global’s existing risk assessment and ecosystem development work in digital asset markets.
Together, the two businesses intend to build a new generation of onchain security assessments and benchmarks, giving capital markets clearer intelligence as more activity shifts onto blockchain rails.
OpenZeppelin was established in 2015 and has since built one of the most widely used open-source smart contract libraries in the industry, alongside its onchain security assessment and secure development work.
Contracts built on its libraries have underpinned more than $37tn in value transferred, a figure that includes most of the largest stablecoins and tokenised funds in circulation.
The firm has also carried out over 900 security engagements for protocols and institutions operating across digital asset markets, and its tools are used by both decentralised finance (DeFi) platforms and established financial institutions to protect the infrastructure that increasingly sits behind digital assets.
Under the terms of the agreement, OpenZeppelin will continue trading under its own name as a standalone business unit rather than being folded into S&P Global’s wider operations. Chief executive Demian Brener will remain at the helm, reporting to Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings.
For S&P Global, the deal extends its risk assessment reach into the technology layer that underlies onchain financial products, while OpenZeppelin gains access to S&P Global’s institutional relationships, established brand and global distribution network to expand further into traditional finance.
S&P Global Ratings president Yann Le Pallec said, “Our digital assets strategy centers on bringing trusted data, benchmarks and transparent risk assessment to markets as they move onchain. As digital assets and tokenized markets continue to mature, OpenZeppelin’s technology and expertise will complement our smart contract and onchain technology risk assessment capabilities, giving traditional financial institutions and DeFi-native companies alike the confidence to build and transact in this new environment.”
OpenZeppelin CEO Demian Brener said, “OpenZeppelin’s standards, technology, and expertise already power the infrastructure behind the world’s leading stablecoins, tokenized funds, DeFi protocols, and onchain markets. With S&P Global, that foundation reaches a broader set of organizations entering this market, as well as the blockchain networks and DeFi protocols gaining institutional adoption.”
