Bitcoin is sitting on a 39% quarterly gain with 11 days left, but a single historic shock could erase it all and push the asset into territory it has never survived before.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) closed the second quarter of 2026 at $58,524 on June 30 and has since surged to $81,214 as of September 19, marking a remarkable 39% increase. To achieve its first green quarter in a year, the Bitcoin price must close above its June 30 position on September 30.

The last instance of Bitcoin finishing a quarter with a positive return was in Q3 of 2025. After peaking at an all-time high of $126,198 on October 6, 2025, Bitcoin has trended downward for three consecutive quarters, making this quarter’s close particularly critical for holders.

Despite its recent gains, Bitcoin remains in negative territory overall for the year, down 7.18% from its $87,498 close on December 31, 2025. The best outcome for September 30 is a green quarter that still falls within a red year. What factors must hold for this to happen, and what could derail it?

August Rally Boosts Bitcoin 39% Above the June 30 Benchmark

The quarter began on a shaky note, with the Bitcoin price dipping to $57,718 on July 1, slightly below the June 30 close. It fluctuated between $61,000 and $66,000 throughout July, concluding the month at $62,826, still a modest lead of about 7%. This lead, however, was vulnerable to erosion from even a single week of poor performance.

The bulk of the gains came from an explosive rally in August. Bitcoin surged to $69,300 on August 19, climbed to $73,012 on August 20, and peaked at $78,326 on August 21, posting a remarkable 13% gain over just two sessions amid the quarter’s highest trading volumes. By August 28, it reached $81,480, approximately 39% above the June 30 close, a threshold Bitcoin has maintained since.

Despite a few pullbacks in September, Bitcoin has regained momentum. After hitting a monthly low of $74,888 on September 15, it rebounded and soared back above $80,000 by September 18. Over the past week, Bitcoin has risen by 5.11%, and it has increased 11.23% over the past month, indicating a positive trajectory as the quarter draws to a close.

A Red Quarter Requires a 28% Drop in 11 Days

For Bitcoin to finish this quarter in the red, the price needs to plunge from $81,214 to below $58,524 by the close on September 30, a drop of about 28%. This level of decline has only happened once this year, when Bitcoin fell from $88,311 on January 20 to $62,354 on February 5, a 29% drop that unfolded over 16 days.

The largest pullback this quarter has been a mere fraction of that, a 9% decline from a high around $82,262 on September 3 down to $74,888 on September 15. To close the quarter red, Bitcoin needs to sustain over three consecutive drops of that magnitude in just 11 days, an extremely challenging scenario.

Stock Market Volatility Is the Biggest Threat to Bitcoin’s Momentum

A major driving force behind a potential 28% drop is the stock market. The Bitcoin price often moves in tandem with broader market trends, particularly during sell-off events. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), which indicates expected fluctuations in the S&P 500 over the next 30 days, closed at 15.44 on September 17, 13.5% lower than the previous week. The norm is a VIX reading below 20.

In March, when the VIX reached 31.05, Bitcoin slid from $71,310 to $66,338 over two days, a drop of about 7%. While a similar move seems unlikely with the VIX at 15.44, historical patterns suggest major market disruption could lead to a larger pullback in Bitcoin’s price.

Other potential risks stem from within the crypto industry. Scenarios like a major exchange failure, forced liquidations due to collapsing collateral values, or severe U.S. regulatory actions could each trigger significant price drops. However, these risks are inherently unpredictable, making them difficult for traders to navigate.

One scheduled event that may influence Bitcoin’s price is the quarter-end positioning by funds that report their holdings on September 30. This typically results in price nudges rather than directional shifts.

While the VIX reflects trader sentiment about future volatility, it does not indicate actual buying or selling activity. Much of Bitcoin trading occurs within exchange order books, so a stable VIX doesn’t necessarily mean calm trading conditions. Although the current VIX suggests traders don’t anticipate immediate turbulence, it doesn’t rule out unforeseen market events that could affect Bitcoin’s price before the quarter closes.

Will Bitcoin Close the Third Quarter in the Green?

We believe it is highly probable, barring any significant shocks to the stock market that could dwarf the March volatility, that Bitcoin will close above its June 30 closing price before September 30. The gap between the current price of $81,214 and the June 30 closing price of $58,524 is wider than any movement Bitcoin has experienced in a span of 11 days this year. Additionally, with the VIX at 15.44, there is currently little indication of the stress levels that contributed to the 29% decline in January and February.

A green close would effectively break Bitcoin’s three-quarter losing streak. However, achieving this does not rectify the year’s performance entirely, as the Bitcoin price still needs to rise approximately 8% from $81,214 to hit the critical starting line of $87,498. Conversely, a red close could have far more significant repercussions. Fundstrat’s Tom Lee has highlighted that Bitcoin has never recorded four consecutive losing quarters in its history, so a close below $58,524 on September 30 could position Bitcoin in uncharted territory.
