Nvidia Omniverse gets spatial computing update with OpenXR support

As part of this year’s SIGGRAPH 2023, Nvidia announced a major update to Omniverse that brings the “industrial metaverse” to more XR platforms.

Nvidia announced a major update to its Omniverse platform at SIGGRAPH 2023. Key new features include support for OpenUSD, new applications and integrations, generative AI capabilities, and spatial computing enhancements.

Omniverse users can now create content, experiences, and applications that are compatible with other OpenUSD-based spatial computing platforms such as AR Kit and RealityKit. Spatial computing options can be natively integrated into all Omniverse-based OpenUSD applications.

OpenUSD, short for Open Universal Scene Description, is a technology developed by Pixar Animation Studios. It is used to describe 3D scenes and enable collaboration between different tools, data and workflows. Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk and Nvidia recently joined The Linux Foundation to form the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD), which aims to improve interoperability in the 3D ecosystem by advancing OpenUSD. Nvidia has already referred to the technology as the “HTML of the Metaverse.”

Omniverse: Spatial computing update brings OpenXR support.

Speaking of Metaverse: The update also adds support for Khronos Group’s OpenXR open standard, enabling Omniverse to run on VR headsets, AR headsets, and XR glasses from manufacturers such as HTC, Magic Leap, and Varjo.

The new release also expands the OpenUSD ecosystem with new integrations and connections to Omniverse. For example, Adobe Firefly generative AI models will soon be available as APIs in Omniverse to improve design workflows. The update also adds external connections to Luma AI, Convai, Inworld AI, and other platforms to integrate their digital content such as avatars or NeRFs, as well as support for streaming large geospatial datasets.
