Samsung and Google have kept details under wraps about their upcoming mixed reality headset, designed to challenge Apple’s Vision Pro. However, a recent announcement reveals the technology giants will incorporate a newer version of Qualcomm’s XR chips in their new headsets.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Unveiled

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. has introduced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform, a significant upgrade in their single-chip architecture designed for extended reality (XR). This cutting-edge platform utilizes advanced spatial computing technology. It delivers visuals with an impressive resolution of 4.3K and a smooth frame rate of 90 frames per second, ensuring clear and immersive experiences for users.

Overall, this technology aims to ensure crisp mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences and enhance the depth and realism of these immersive environments.

Hugo Swart, Vice President and General Manager of XR at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., highlighted the platform’s impact on XR productivity and entertainment. “Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 unlocks 4.3K resolution, which will take XR productivity and entertainment to the next level,” he said. The platform is expected to revolutionize room-scale screens, life-size overlays, and virtual desktops.

Samsung and Google Collaboration

Samsung and Google are poised to leverage the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 to deliver cutting-edge XR experiences. Although Google and Samsung have not detailed the specific products that will incorporate the new Qualcomm chip, the collaboration highlights the growing importance of high-quality XR solutions in the tech industry.

Building on the foundations laid by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, the upgraded ‘+’ model amplifies the realistic detail in MR and VR experiences. It achieves this through a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% rise in CPU frequency. The integration of powerful on-device AI allows for the tracking of user movements and the surrounding environment, merging physical and digital realms.

Inkang Song, Vice President and Head of the Technology Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Qualcomm Technologies and Google. “With Samsung’s mobile expertise and our joint commitment, we aim to create the best-in-class XR experience for Galaxy users,” he stated.

Furthermore, Shahram Izadi, Vice President of AR at Google, also conveyed excitement about the ongoing partnership with Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung. “We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung on the future of immersive and spatial XR.” He also added, “We’re excited for the Android ecosystem to take advantage of Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2’s capabilities and enable new experiences.”

This venture, aimed at rivalling top players like Apple’s Vision Pro, showcases a commitment to advancing immersive experiences with Qualcomm’s advanced XR chip in their new mixed-reality headset. This partnership underlines the evolving landscape of XR technology, potentially impacting both consumer, professional, and Metaverse realms.
