The metaverse – a virtual realm promising shared experiences and real-time interactions within simulated scenarios – is encountering obstacles on its path to widespread adoption, according to a report by GlobalData.

GlobalData’s latest study, titled “Metaverse – Thematic Intelligence,” sheds light on the challenges hindering the metaverse’s growth.

Chief among these challenges are limited knowledge of the theme, underwhelmed consumers, project delays by major technology companies, and mounting concerns regarding privacy and security.

Despite these hurdles, the report predicts the metaverse’s value to reach an impressive $400 billion by 2030—a significant leap from its $48 billion valuation in 2022.

Rupantar Guha, Principal Analyst at GlobalData’s Thematic Intelligence team, said:

“The metaverse has failed to match the excessive hype that surrounded it in 2021 and early 2022. Its potential is hampered by limited use cases and the constraints of foundational technologies like blockchain, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and digital twins.

Unless there are significant advancements in these technologies, the metaverse is likely to continue disappointing enthusiasts.”

Guha emphasised the importance of user-friendly interfaces, seamless integration of real and virtual environments, and ensuring safety and comfort during prolonged usage. He also highlighted the significance of diverse content offerings, stating that platform providers must provide a wide array of content to keep users engaged. Focusing solely on one content type could limit revenue opportunities in the long run.

While the metaverse hype primarily centres around consumer applications, the report suggests that its future lies in enterprise solutions.

Applications such as data visualisation, collaboration tools, and training modules are expected to drive adoption among large corporations in the coming years, despite lingering scepticism about the metaverse’s long-term benefits.
